City of Norwich Aviation Museum

Nimrod MR2

The City of Norwich Aviation Museum is situated on the site of the former RAF Horsham St Faith airbase, which is now Norwich International Airport. The museum is nicely positioned on the north side of the main runway and the collection has grown significantly over the years.

History
RAF Horsham St. Faith opened in 1940 and played an active role during the Second World War - operating various types from Blenheims and Spitfires to Mustangs. Horsham St Faith was also home to the USAAF during the war with B24 Liberators and P47 Thunderbolts flying from the station.

The base continued to flourish after the war and became home to the pioneering jet fighter squadrons such as 74 'Tiger' Squadron flying Gloster Meteors. The base finally closed in 1963 after more than 20 years as an operational station.

CNAM started life as an aviation enthusiasts group for members of the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company in 1977. Membership was later opened up to non employees and a temporary site was secured on the 17/35 runway at Norwich Airport.Vulcan XM612

W Whirlwind

In early 1982, museum exhibits included an Avro Anson, Westland Whirlwind, Sea Vixen and a Dassault Mystere IV. The Avro Vulcan flew in to the airport after its retirement from service in 1983 and by 1985 the museum had moved to its present site at Norwich International Airport.

Airframe highlights at the museum include the famous Avro Vulcan bomber (access to the cockpit is available on certain days), the recent addition of the Nimrod MR2, Sepecat Jaguar GR1, a pair of Hawker Hunters, a Saudi Air Force EE Lightning and Gloster Meteor among others.

The main museum building contains a wealth of material including uniforms, models, displays on local aviation history and a scratch build Westland Whirlwind fighter cockpit. There are a number of smaller display huts which contain themed exhibitions such as the history of RAF Coltishall and a further shelter houses the impressive cockpit collection which includes Phantom, Jaguar & Buccaneer.
