Museum opens at historic Essex airfield

Boxted Airfield Museum at Langham in Essex was oficially opened by Henry Farwell (veteran of the 386th Bombardment Group) on May 29th 2011 (above).
Boxted was home to the 56th & 354th Fighter Groups, the 386th Bomber Group and the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron of the US Air Force during the Second World War.
After the war the airfield was handed back to the Air Ministry and was used by the RAF and in January 1946 Night Fighter Mosquito's of 25 Squadron arrived.
Various other squadrons came and went during the next few months, until the RAF finally ceased operations in 1947. In the 1950's the airfield was used by the ATC with gliders and a crop spraying business run by Wing Commander Percy Hatfield.
The musuem houses a collection of artefacts and exhibits relating to the airfiled's history including the part fuselage of a Martin B-26 Marauder (below).

The Boxted Airfield Museum is located on the south-east side of Langham Lane and is open to the public on the following dates in 2011: June 26th, July 31st, August 28/29th and September 25th.
Admission for adults will be £2 and accompanied children are free. Light refreshments and Airfield souvenirs are available from our shop.
