Newark’s MiG-27 gets a makeover

Work has recently started on repainting the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27 “Flogger” 61912507006 “71”, a former Soviet Bloc jet fighter that is currently on loan with the Newark Air Museum. A significant amount of surface preparation has already taken place and the first primer coat applied to one half of the aircraft.

The work is being undertaken by the same local aviation enthusiast who undertook a similar project on the MiG-23 last year. This time round the aircraft will retain its Russian camouflage paint scheme and some minor restoration work will also be carried out on some small areas of corrosion.

It is understood that some enthusiasts have commented that they will “miss the combat-worn appearance”, that has been a hallmark of the MiG-27 in recent years, but the new paint will provide vital protection against the British weather.
