New road show for midland model makers

The Telford Branch of the International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS) will be holding a series of model making demonstrations at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford on Sunday 25th October 2009.

In the first of what is hoped to be a series of regional road shows due to take place around the country, run by local branches of IPMS, experienced Shropshire Scale Modellers will give practical help and advice to new converts of this absorbing and challenging hobby and be on hand to answer any questions that the general public might have about taking up modelling as a pastime.

Visitors will be able to see, in the Museum’s National Cold War Exhibition, how intricately detailed models are built, ask questions on construction techniques and receive advice on choosing and making their first model. So whether you wish to construct an aeroplane, a tank, a classic car or that iconic figure an expert will be on hand throughout the day to explain how you can achieve your desired result.

The road show aims to promote the hobby of model making and encourage people to take up this rewarding and skilful pursuit.

Organiser Gary Stevens of Ellesmere says:
“With so many youngsters playing on computer games these days, basic construction skills are being ignored and model making is a great way of generating those skills in a therapeutic and rewarding way.”

If you’re just starting out in the model world, the road show is a perfect opportunity to see what can be achieved with a little bit of patience.  So, if you are thinking of joining a local model club why not come along and speak with the IPMS members who will be on hand to discuss all the benefits of joining a club from improving your concentration to making new friends! The event will run from 10am - 4pm in the Museum’s National Cold War Exhibition.

In addition to all this, visitors will also be able to view the Museum’s three wartime hangars during their visit.  There is ample car parking available and a restaurant and souvenir shop on site.

The Museum is open from 10am – 6pm (last admission 5pm). Admission is free. For further information, please call the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford on 01902 376200 or visit the Museum website at www.rafmuseum.org.
